The words This Machine Kills Sexists immediately caught my eye as Aly Cabral strummed her guitar and started to perform – from there I understood how music acts as a vehicle of expression. As a known feminist and founder of the collective, Kababae Mong Tao, Aly’s message is loud and clear, and with her music, we see how words can speak volumes.
Eccentric and free-spirited, Aly makes the music she wants to make through her musical pursuits, and wears many hats in the realm of indie music. Aly takes the role of frontwoman for seven-year-old indie folk rock band, Ourselves The Elves. She also has solo projects to explore different facets of her life – folk to delve deeper in her roots and “expand my principles and intuition through words, voice, and guitar, mainly.” and electronic, which depicts her relationship with technology and the internet. “All of which are essential and equal parts of my musical expression,” Aly notes.
In this episode of Sound Fiesta, Aly performs the track, Rapunzel. “Rapunzel is about that push and pull between living alone and having a companion, which I think all of us have, whether in romantic terms or not. It’s about the courage of going out into the world versus the fear that locks you up in your tower, letting your hair grow long. And the balance in between,” Aly explains. I could not have said it better.
Sound Fiesta is supported by Johnnie Walker, and in collaboration with Playhouse Studio for video production and Cosmic Sonic Arts for audio management.
