When you think of the most eccentric and fashion-forward country on this side of the world, more likely than not you would imagine Japan—whether it’s their diverse streetwear scene, the remarkable Harajuku fashion, or their trademark minimalist aesthetic. Now, think of the most cutting-edge source of fashion on the other side of the world. A stark departure from its haute couture-filled neighbors, Germany comes into mind—Berlin, in particular.
Combining the fashion scenes in these two places together with the recent resurgence of all things ‘90s is where Onitsuka Tiger drew inspiration from for their AW19 Collection titled “Downtown Rave.” Andrea Pompilio, lead designer of this collection, meant to symbolize the party club culture—from fashionably loose fits, thick soles, and big logos. Within the Downtown Rave collection are five themes released every month namely The Athleisure Mix, The Printed Noise, The Fluorescent Clubbing Snowboarder, The Raw Urban Uniform, and Retro Futuristic.
The collection reflects the chunky shoe trend with its Chunky Runner Lo and Chunky Slip On—both of which scream ‘90s retro. The classics come with a twist with the Knit Trainer, Big Logo Trainer, and Rebilac Runner. All three have the iconic stripe BIG logo in varied placements, treatments, and material.
The collection also took inspiration from the traditional Japanese geta sandals with its Pokkuri Sneaker PF with wide, elevated platform soles as its defining feature. Lastly, keeping true to its origin as a sport shoe brand, Onitsuka Tiger looked to the 1975 basketball scene and brought back the FABRE BL-S shoe but with a modern take with the FABRE BL-S 2.0. Its name comes from the word “fast break” and with this pair, you are assured of a comfortable finish.
Onitsuka Tiger, known for its pristine attention to detail and creativity once again proved itself deserving of a world-wide recognition as an impeccable Japanese brand. Bringing together form, function, and aesthetic, its Autumn Winter ‘19 Downtown Rave collection is no exception. A pair or two or more’s worthy of their places in your shoe arsenal.
