Tala Gil or TALA is no stranger to the local music scene. Having come from a musically inclined family — her dad, Dan Gil, is a member of an OPM band while her cousin, Nikki Gil, is an award winning singer and actress — musical prowess practically runs through her veins.

Over the years, the artist has made her own name in the industry characterized by her smooth vocals, charismatic lyrics and slow jams. For the fifth episode of Sound Fiesta season 2, TALA performs Labi, a modern rendition of a track originally produced by her father’s band, Chillitees.

We chat with the singer about how she got her start in music, her creative process, and the context behind Labi.

How did you get into music?

My parents are professional musicians, so my sister and I grew up around music. Learning instruments, taking dance lessons, and singing were all a huge part of our education, which is how I learned to love music the way I do now. My parents also had a recording studio and that exposed us to how the music industry works.

How would you describe your sound?

I don’t like describing my sound because I feel like doing so puts me in a box.  Growing as an artist is a never ending process, so I can’t really define it. My music now may not sound like my music in a year, and I would like it to perpetually evolve.

What’s your creative process like when coming up with your tracks?

I don’t think I have a definitive creative process because many things inspire me. I write when I feel like it. Sometimes, I’ll have to lock myself in my room for hours just to finish a verse, or I’ll be walking on the street and I’ll suddenly think of a melody and use my phone to record it. I like collaborations because I believe it is essential for me to learn from other artists.

What’s the story behind ‘Labi’?

My dad wrote and released this song under his band Chillitees 10 years ago. It’s one of my favorite songs that my dad has written so when I had the chance to remake it, I jumped at the opportunity. The title is “Labi” because it’s centered around an intoxicating kiss. It’s the feeling of being in love with someone who may not have the capacity to love you back at that exact moment.

Any upcoming projects we can expect from you in the future?

I just released a new single titled “Ain’t Leaving Without You” and I hope to finish a few more projects and collaborations before the year ends.
