In early 2013, just a few months in running the PURVEYR brand (we started in September 2012), we launched the first season of PURVEYRtv — a video talk show featuring various Filipino creators and personalities with Rjay Ty and Joyce Pring as the hosts. The decision to put it out may seem premature right now, but it revealed a way how we run and push PURVEYR — sort of brave, somehow considered, very naive, but always with conviction. Although I can’t say it has always worked for us because PURVEYRtv actually just ran for one season, but it was a good run in my opinion. We were able to feature the likes of Egg Fiasco, Niccolo of Nick Automatic, Abra, Ruby Ibarra, Diego Castillo, Soleil Ignacio, DJ SPNZ (now known as Yung Bawal), and more in the 15 episodes we had. You can still view all those episodes on YouTube if you searched for it, but unfortunately it is not uploaded under our account.
Fast forward to 2019, six years after PURVEYRtv, we still had the urge to run a talk show featuring the same creative community we focus on. However, this time around we decided to only delve into audio — podcasting to be more specific. Podcast shows and audio “reading” have been big recently for self-improvement and entertainment purposes. The convenience of still being able to do something else while listening has made the medium very popular. I usually listen to my favorite ones while driving or working. And others might do it while working out, commuting, etc. The medium is very versatile for listeners’ consumption and publishers’ storytelling, which is why we find it a very interesting one to explore.
With this, I’m very excited to announce our first ever podcast show for PURVEYR—Radio, “Prologue.” It is a show where I will interview different individuals from the diverse fields of Philippine creative culture. Expect to hear personal stories of growth, success, failures, and more — we will try to make it as relatable and insightful as we can.
For the first season of “Prologue” we interviewed 10 creative people, and for each episode, we deep dive with one guest about their story — how he/she grew up, what they did to get where they are today, and more. We start with co-founder of WYD Productions, UNSCHLD, and Perea Street, Julo de Guzman.
I have known Julo since 2010 at the time when he was still co-running Commune, their multi-brand retail store, was still in Perea St., Makati City. From that humble retail and community concept, Julo went on to pursue bigger projects with all his endeavors. Catch our conversation about a slew of topics about his journey, from how watching Nike commercials became significant to his interests to running a retail store at night while working for a bank during the day, and from hosting community-driven events and Saturday hangouts to establishing a well-known IG Story show. All that and more in this debut episode of Prologue.
