With quarantine in place, work and much of life are put on hold — that includes cinema production. This is evident in how the prime time TV series in our local channels have been airing re-runs of iconic shows for the past weeks. Not knowing when the situation will start to get better and when lives would return to normal — if there is even a normal to go back to, how then do visual storytellers continue to tell their stories?
There’s no denying that social media has created new ways of storytelling — from Twitter series to meme threads. It has allowed creators to be more imaginative and innovative in meeting readers right at their touch points. The Unconfined Cinema showed us how. This time, it was entirely through Instagram.
Antoinette Jadaone is no stranger to producing some of the most well-loved local love stories in recent times. Teaming up with Erwin Romulo, Philbert Dy, and Dan Villegas, they sought out “Love Team” — featuring one of the most iconic love teams, Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz. The result? A beautiful love story told over two weeks, adapting and evolving into real-life events that perfectly integrates genuine sentiments over the situation we’re all in. Using the various features native to the platform, they told a story of two people reconnecting in a difficult time while separated by physical distance, with only their memories to keep them together.
They wrote, “The Uncofined Cinema invites filmmakers and artists to join us in exploring the possibilities of our cinema. Not just on Instagram, but on every stage imaginable.” And as humans, we are known to be adaptable and innovative. It’s only a matter of time before creators explore and go beyond the possibilities that’s long been limited by the nor.
