With the pandemic forcing the art world to find new avenues to display their creativity, a team of Filipino multimedia artists teamed up with the  Italian luxury fashion label Valentino to showcase an entire collection using the most unlikely medium — Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

For those who have never heard of the game before, Animal Crossing is a social simulation where your character can participate in various activities like fishing, planting, decorating, and interacting with other in-game characters. But what made the game a hit for young adults is the feature of playing around with characters’ clothes, even as far as letting you create the designs yourself. The game features a pixel board in the clothes customization menu, allowing players to draw their designs and actually wear them in-game.

Players were quick to utilize this new platform for their playful creativity, and Kara Chung and her friends were no exceptions. They created the Instagram account account @animalcrossingfashionarchives as a digital album for the looks they assembled for their characters, and this simple quarantine project did not go unnoticed.

Valentino, an Italian luxury brand, reached out to the community and discussed with Chung on how they could bring their Spring/Summer ’20 and Fall ’20 collections into the platform. Together with Carlo Antonio Lee, Isai Araneta, Jason Roberto, Maia Puyat, Nicole Concepcion, Rafael Alfonso, and Selina De Guzman, Kara Chung created 20 Valentino looks that feature everything from fluorescent dresses, puffer jackets, to logo hats.

In their Instagram post, Chung expressed her gratitude towards Valentino for proving that “the joy of creation translates into the digital realm and beyond.” And it comes as an encouraging message to designers and players alike that creativity can be expressed even at times like these.

Players can check and wear the looks through unique codes that they can enter in the game. The codes can be downloaded from Valentino’s official Instagram account, and Animal Crossing Fashion Archives.
