San Mig Light — PURVEYR: 20 Light Years

Stroll around in public, and you’ll notice people gathered in restaurants and coffee shops seated face-to-face but planets away from each other. Thus far referred to as the most socially connected, disconnected generation of humans, we live in a time where being perpetually glued to our screens is the new normal; and nothing has kept us further apart. Do you even remember the last time you wholeheartedly anchored yourself into a conversation?

When was the last time you spoke to a friend, without feeling the urge to capture a story? When did you last gaze into someone’s eyes to listen, without ears on alert, awaiting the next notification?

Do you recall what it’s like to be fully present, tears glossing your eyes midway laughter over a joke? There’s an appeal to the disarrayed but joyful: friends singing at the top of their lungs off key on the benches of unassuming neighborhoods; of images unkempt that feature a good kind of chaos. It’s the welcoming glow of the unfiltered: a space where people can recount bits of being down-to-earth.

When our gadgets distract us from the very company that deserves our undivided attention, time is splintered senseless. We tear ourselves apart, stealing life from the purity of moments.

For most of us Filipinos, the invitation to have a beer spans light years beyond a night of fun; it’s (all of that and) a language of its own: it means “I miss you dear friend,” or  “I just need someone to talk to”; it’s that subtle, unawkward, nudge that allows us to check in with our loved ones. For lack of a better excuse, “May inuman dito” is a good enough reason to invite friends over. Ingrained in these get-togethers besides humor, laughter, and wit is our distinctive warmth as a people.

Memorable conversations go back to the cold beers we’ve shared with friends, sometimes leading us to making new ones; frequently relaxed and light, other times, deep and far-reaching discussions that stretch our minds into the break of dawn.

In celebration of 20 Light Years, San Mig Light invites us to honor the depth and breadth of these expressions; dialogue that inspires Filipinos to launch themselves into substantial topics, stirring life into progressive thought.

20 Light Years Collection

For the 20 Light Years Project of San Mig Light and PURVEYR, we chose four social issues to focus on; Gender Equality, Community, Creativity and Mental Health. These social issues became the main inspirations of the 20 Filipino Creators for their exclusive designs, and as well as the topics for the four Panel Talks we will host from November 2019 to January 2020 in different cities in the Philippines.

Gender Equality

Gender equality whisks quite the controversy among social media discussions, but at the core of its friction lies the essence of compassion. More than the right to express ourselves authentically through our physical attitudes, gender equality plunges chiefly into the principle of respect: equal opportunity and safety aren’t by-products of our biological makeup or sexual orientations; they’re intrinsically every human’s birthright.

The Creators who expressed Gender Equality are:
Kita — T-Shirt
TRNZ — Tote Bag
Gianne Encarnacion — Scarf

Community

The influence of community is strong. Technology may be pulled apart for its obstructive side of the sword, but its other edge brings with it the capacity to mobilize shared ideas at the tap of a finger. The dissemination of information at lightning breeze levels out the playing field. Gone are the gatekeepers to keep the amplitude of our voices bound. Today, each individual’s sound counts more than we know it; in the age of the sharing economy, only the collective whole will shape waves powerful enough to pound the pavement.

The Creators who expressed Community are:
Hey, Mady — T-Shirt
Jai Hernandez — Tote Bag
Anina Rubio — Scarf
Tropical Futures Institute — Beer Mug
Distort Monsters — Coaster

Creativity

Art has never played a more stirring role in the scheme of timing. Today, we find the definition of creativity broadening its scope. Retrospective in nature, we’re paralleling the age of enlightenment; as if slinging ourselves back to the future, we’re circling a second renaissance – and there has never been a more glorious space for makers to disrupt. In today’s explosive laboratory, science and technology excitingly holds hands with creativity.

The Creators who expressed Creativity are:

Mental Health

The intrapersonal is at a critical crossroads. As the disillusionment of societal success sinks to settle in, the common state of mental health is concurrently declining. This inevitable shift is opening our eyes to the dangers of human commodification. More than competitive cogs mechanically running the rat race for the sake of greater profits, we are human beings in need of things we can never put a price on: kindness, empathy, love, and vulnerability should not be afterthoughts in the vocabulary of life.

The Creators who expressed Mental Health are:
