KAYO COSIO CURATES FOR NIKE BATTLE FORCE MANILA
When representing the celebration of basketball and street culture through art, you turn to someone with an established track record of spot-on curation. For Nike Battle Force Manila, that person is Kayo Cosio.
Known for his distinct taste and sharp eye for style, Kayo is the master planner of the five art installations that will be competing in this year’s Art Battle of Nike Battle Force Manila. Each of the five artists have varied aesthetics—abstract, geometrics, sculpture, wood, aerosol and graffiti—that even if they all start on the same ground, the way that they approach and play around with it will set them apart. Just like in a game of basketball where teams bring different styles of play against one another—all contributing to forty minutes of excitement brought about by the game we all love.
Each piece is a nod to the game of basketball and various street subcultures that have played an important role in cultivating it and have consistently co-existed with it. See the intersection of basketball, skating, graffiti, local art, design, and our distinct Filipino culture. See them all in Nike Battle Force Manila Finale on November 24, 2018 at Three Parkade, Bonifacio Global City. Gates will open at 3PM.
JERICK ROBLEZA (@jerikkkk) — MAKA STUDIO, LA UNION
Beyond riding waves during sunrise or sunsets in San Juan, it boasts of food, art, and afternoons filled with games of 3 on 3—a sight that’s not only exclusive to the concrete jungles of the city, but even in the stillness and quiet of Elyu (La Union).
In the game of basketball here, the term “dayo” (outsider) takes on a whole new meaning when out-of-towners outnumber the locals. While many local basketball cultures tend to be defensive and territorial, the tight-knit, fun-loving community of San Juan welcomes all. Pay no mind to who wins or loses. This is a place that encourages everyone to play the game and have a great time while at it.
Rattan represents natural growth and roots. Weaving symbolizes our differences and shows how beautiful it is when we play together. Silkscreen designs are about making your mark with style.
Come and play. No agenda, just hoops.
KRIS ABRIGO (@krisabrigo) — TITAN LOVE COURT, BGC
In the condominium where Kris lives lies full court that is almost never empty. If the property management didn’t shut down the court every night, people would not stop practicing their shooting skills and doing round robin passing drills.
Stone-finish sculptures represent the stiff competition and level of difficulty faced when going against a local team. They play a passing game, so precision is important. Abrigo adds finishing touches to his statues through colorways that reflect the personalities of the best players in his hometown.
DISTORT MONSTERS (@distortmonsters) — RONAC ART CENTER, SAN JUAN
In this corner of busy San Juan, defense is the name of the game. The players who frequent this place are titans of the court. They work on their game and master the art of zone defense down to the littlest details. With their honed skills, taking a shot turns to a game of luck. And in the rare and difficult times that you are able to shoot your shot, you tend to get knocked off because the players give you their most intense guard game or they will—without hesitation—block you.
Designed in a totem pole structure, these guys protect their courts as street ball gods. Be ready to throw down and be held to a higher standard if you enter this court. Test your skills against this monster defense!
LEE CACES (@leecaces) — LOKAL HOSTEL, POBLACION
Kids who grew up in Antipolo were taught one lesson at an early age—defend your home court no matter what. By the time they turn eight, they know the street basketball culture like the back of their hands. In this city, basketball is everywhere—whether that’s in courts in marble floors or in makeshift hoops in narrow streets. The game is ingrained on everyone’s childhood as much as classic childhood Filipino games like tumbang preso, taguan, and tic-tac-toe.
This installation replicates the makeshift street game goals and combines it with one of those other childhood staples. Use this display and try to score a tic tac toe line, or use your skills to steal a basket away!
BVDOT (@bvdot) — TITAN LOVE COURT, BGC
BVDOT (pronounced as Bad-ot) hails from one of the most highly urbanized zones of the metro—the bustling city of Mandaluyong. In this densely populated and always busy area, skate, tagging, and basketball meet eye-to-eye. Interestingly, these activities happen simultaneously throughout the day, and sometimes even in the exact place.
That place is the barangay court. In this concrete space, these different circles clash against each other, but end up creating sparks. Each activity co-exists with one another—bringing in different cultures, and each making their mark. Everything requires speed, technical skill, and physicality.
This work sees basketball co-existing with other street cultures it is highly related to— graffiti tagging and skateboarding. All these cultures are about marking your territory. Mark yours.
