One of the most popular places in the country to conduct a photowalk would be Binondo. The streets of this Chinatown is gritty, raw, and full of emotions, especially when the clouds start to pour in some rain.

So on a rainy Saturday afternoon, OPPO, together with PURVEYR, invited three photographers from this year’s OPPO Creators Awards to host a photowalk in Binondo using the latest OPPO Reno 10x Zoom from the OPPO Reno Series. 19 other photography enthusiasts also joined, and were mentored by Rainer Gonzales, Martin San Diego, and Jilson Tiu.

One of the things you first notice when you deal with photographers is how they have their own style — and it manifests not only in their creative output, but also in the way they work. And for OPPO, specifically with the Reno Collective, it’s important to feature the individuality of the artists.

Jilson Tiu

Started as a photojournalist in one of the biggest publications in the country, Jilson Tiu didn’t know he was actually doing street photography until a local lifestyle website published an article about street photographers, which he was part of. Aside from this, he also tackles environmental and social issues through his personal documentary and NGO works.

Martin San Diego

For Martin San Diego whose works have been published globally, his main focus is documentary photography. Being trained as a correspondent for a local news site, he always look for stories and his work revolves around oppression, religion, and culture. He has covered the stories like the insurgency in Marawi and the Black Nazarene parade, and has also been the photographer for the late Senator Miriam Santiago during the 2016 National Elections.

Rainier Gonzales

Rainier Gonzales has established himself in the urban photography scene. For him, photography started only as a hobby but he’s now doing it professionally for 3 years already. He’s now expanding his portfolio, collaborating with different brands for portrait and lifestyle photography. Rainier wants people to see a whole new perspective through his work, like seeing beauty in struggle. His photos not only speak, but they make you feel something.

Limitless Creative Freedom

More often than not, photographers take photos using their professional cameras, or even film cameras. But with the convenience that OPPO Reno 10x Zoom brings, the three featured photographers find themselves no longer using their DSLRs, especially for situations where they need to capture a quick money shot moment.

For Martin, photography is about seeing different perspectives and telling stories. He said, “just shoot and shoot. You won’t get better at your craft when you just read articles or reviews in the internet. Go out, shoot everyday, practice, and make the most out of whatever gear you have.” And that’s exactly what happened during the photowalk.

As a photographer, you see subjects that you want to take a photo of, even if that subject is a few meters away from you. For Rainier, he no longer needs to bring several lenses with him to carry around. He just takes out OPPO Reno 10x Zoom from his pocket, set it on the telephoto setting, and capture. Creativity is no longer limited by distance, since the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom delivers high quality images with its 10x Hybrid Zoom.

Among the other favorite features of the phone is the Expert Mode – where you can fully control and adjust the shutter speed, aperture, white balance, and focus, similar to the function of a professional camera.

“I love to shoot in the rain. Some people might find it not too ideal because it’s dark, and it’s a hassle raising your umbrella and shoot,” said Jilson who also got to test the phone’s Ultra Night Mode 2.0 feature during the photowalk. He also tried to do panning on some of his shots, and commended the stabilizer of the phone.

There are many things you can create with the OPPO Reno 10x Zoom. And even though it was a challenge to shoot in the rain, the participants made sure that they were able to maximize the features of the phone. Aside from the 10x zoom, expert mode, and low light settings, other participants of the photowalk also discovered the Dazzle Color feature of the phone, which enhances more vibrancy to the colors of the photos making them look already polished. Others played around with the Wide-Angle Lens which distorts perspectives, and the Portrait Mode to differentiate between the subject and the background.

Pushing Creative Boundaries

Creativity is described in so many ways by the different brands in the market, and OPPO wants to stand out among the clutter, especially in the digital space. As a brand that’s known to partner with big names in the entertainment industry, OPPO considers the Reno Series campaign as a bold move since it is now focusing on supporting local talents from different facets of art.

A key aspect of the Reno campaign is the Reno Collective which was curated by OPPO to shed light on what the Reno series embodies and values: creative freedom and artistic expression, taking shape in all forms and aesthetics. The brand collaborated with many artists from different facets of art, all housed under The Reno Collective which include the three photographers to help bring to life the campaign’s vision – to spark creative inspiration. Headlining this campaign are fashion icons Daryl and Andre Chang, local indie musicians IV of Spades, street artist Dex Fernandez, and film director Treb Monteras II.

“We are all artists and the world is our canvas: this is something that we have kept in mind while putting together the Reno Collective. We wanted to bring together different artists who are visionaries from their respective fields because having that creative vision has to start somewhere. Through this collective, people would be more inspired to further their creative boundaries,” said Tiffany Uy, PR Manager for OPPO Philippines. Hence, you can only expect the brand to continue featuring artists that are raw, bold, and full of passion for their craft.
